The most incredible thing happened this afternoon. We were out for a leisurely Sunday walk when we saw this little bird just sitting in the middle of the road. We thought there was something wrong with him as he didn't move or fly away as we approached. So my mum picked him up and he seemed happy to let her do so; he didn't struggle or try to get away and we didn't restrain him at all.
He sat there in her hand for a while and then we transferred him to my hand, as I was very excited to be able to hold him! We checked him over as we weren't sure whether he was injured, but he was fine and very alert. We wondered whether perhaps he was just a very young bird who couldn't fly properly yet? So we tried to encourage him to fly by moving my hand up and down but he just seemed to enjoy the ride! I spoke to him, stroked him, and he seemed perfectly content to just sit there. We'd reached the stage where we were convinced that he couldn't fly, when suddenly he leapt off my hand, flew onto my chest, and then on to my mum's head! After spending a minute or so perched on her head, he launched into the air and flew up to join his friend.
I found the whole thing completely magical and incredible - nothing like this had never happened to either of us before! I posted this photo and a slightly shorter version of the story on Instagram and Facebook, where it had (and continues to have, at the time of writing) the most amazing response from people. We found out through the comments that this little bird is a Dunnock, so I searched for more information and found that they are apparently quite timid birds - which makes this even more astonishing!
Why was this little bird so tame and so trusting of us? He didn't seem to want to willingly leave us. Somebody said in the comments section of the Facebook post, "He knew you were a painter of birds...", and someone else joked on Instagram that perhaps he wanted me to paint his portrait! Well, little chap, you have your wish. I'm going to try my best to capture your beauty and lovely, curious, character. Watch this space!
P.S. A big thank you to everyone for your fantastic responses to this on my social media accounts - I had no idea he would be such an internet superstar! :)
