Natasha Newton Art & Illustration

I'm a full-time artist and illustrator, living and working in Suffolk on the east coast of England, and in the beautiful countryside of Surrey, where I'm in the process of setting up my new studio. I gain ideas and inspiration for my work during my regular walks along the beach, and through the heathlands, fields and forests. Spending time outside in nature is very important to me and my love of the countryside is apparent in all my paintings, whether it's a vast winter landscape with a sky full of stars, or a bird singing a beautiful song. I've been told that my art evokes a sense of peace, calm, and quietness.

I enjoy the versatility of water-based media so I tend to work mainly in acrylic on canvas, and in watercolour, gouache and ink on paper. Applying the acrylic paint in thin layers on to the canvas, I work from dark to light, allowing each one to remain partially visible through the subsequent layers. I've found that this method of working gives the paintings a wonderful richness and depth of tone.

I've exhibited in galleries throughout the UK and overseas, and my work has been selected several times for major shows including The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Society of Women Artists, and the Singer and Friedlander/Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, all held at the Mall Galleries, London. Alongside gallery shows, a selection of original paintings and prints are available to purchase online through my shops on Etsy and my website, and my art now sells to collectors worldwide, with paintings in more than 20 countries.

My work has been used by the publishing company Random House for a series of five books by the author Jorge Bucay, and has been featured in Swedish magazines Elle Decoration and Family Living, UK magazines Homes & Gardens, Ideal Home, and Resurgence & Ecologist, the Dutch magazine Flow, and Danish magazine Hendes Verden. I have a 5-page feature and interview in Issue 7 of Breathe magazine (July/August 2017). You can also find my work in the books Just Add Watercolour, Rock Art, and 365 Nature.
